“We have recently revised and answered several insightful questions about our privacy policy. We want to answer some of the common questions we have received with rumours. We spend a great deal of time developing WhatsApp to help people connect privately.

A detailed FAQ was also published to address misinformation circulated about the policy:

We cannot see or hear your private messages and Facebook cannot read your Facebook message or listen to your contacts, relatives and colleagues on WhatsApp. WhatsApp does not allow WhatsApp and Facebook. It stays between you whatever you share. This is because the end-to-end encryption protects your confidential messages. This protection will never be weakened and every chat is clearly named, so you know our dedication.

We do not maintain records on who anyone is messageing or calling. We believe that storing this information for two billion users is both a privacy and a security danger and we do not. While historically mobile carriers and operators store it, we do not.

If you share your place with someone else on WhatsApp, then your location is secured by end-to-end encryption, which means nobody can see your location but the individuals with whom you share it. You can’t find a common location or Facebook either.

We don’t share your Facebook contacts: we just use your address book’s telephone numbers to make messages quick and accurate, when you give us your permission and we do not share lists of contacts with other Facebook users.


Groups remain private: to send messages and to protect our service against spam and violence, we use community membership. For marketing purposes, we do not share this information with Facebook. Again, these private chats are encrypted from end to end to prevent us from seeing their material.

You can configure your messages to go away: after you have sent your messages you can determine that they will go away from the chats for additional privacy.

You can download your data: you can download information and see from inside the app what information we have on your account.
